Anti-Entropy: a Young Wizards-inspired mix

I pulled together this mix during some low points over the past year and originally posted it to my journal a couple weeks back. For a while it's been my go-to "bad day" playlist: it starts out being a little sad and a little angry about the things in the world that don't work out and the days when you feel like you've woken up for nothing, but it ends up in a much better place (if not actually happy, at least trying).

While this isn't strictly a Young Wizards fanmix, as the title suggests, it's heavily indebted to YW, particularly DD's insistence that wizardry isn't the only way to counter entropy -- that even "ordinary" people are involved in staving off the Lone One's designs, and that being happy, though hard, matters in the scheme of the universe and not just the scheme of an individual life. Some of the songs on the mix are, for me, very obviously songs about Young Wizards -- a lot of the earlier ones seem relevant to the aftermath of Dilemma, a lot of the later ones about fighting entropy in general -- and in fact I came across a couple of them specifically via YW fandom (I found Rilo Kiley's "A Better Son/Daughter" ages ago via labellementeuse's Dairine fanmix, and Regina Spektor's "On the Radio" via rusting_roses's fic "This (Is How it Works)").

Anyway, even if it isn't specifically YW, I figured I'd share it, in case someone else needs a little bad-day pick-me-up.

1. Bells of New York City – Josh Groban

It's always this time of year that my thoughts undo me
With the ghosts of many lifetimes all abound
But from these mad heights I can always hear the sound
Of the bells of New York City singing all around

2. Be OK – Ingrid Michaelson

I just want to feel today, feel today, feel today
I just want to feel something today
I just want to know today, know today, know today
Know that maybe I will be ok

3. Helplessness Blues – Fleet Foxes

If I know only one thing, it's that everything that I see
Of the world outside is so inconceivable often I barely can speak
Yeah I'm tongue-tied and dizzy and I can't keep it to myself
What good is it to sing helplessness blues, why should I wait for anyone else?

4. Blue Skies – Noah and the Wale

This is a song for anyone
With a broken heart
This is a song for anyone
Who can't get out of bed
I'll do anything
To be happy
Oh 'cause blue skies are calling
But I know that it's hard

5. Augustine – Vienna Teng

Oh now I'm breaking down, I'm breaking down

6. The Heart of Life – John Mayer

Pain throws your heart to the ground
Love turns the whole thing around
Fear is a friend who's misunderstood
But I know the heart of life is good

7. A Better Son/Daughter – Rilo Kiley

And you'll be awake and you'll be alert
You'll be positive though it hurts
And you'll laugh and embrace all your friends

8. Shake it Out – Florence + the Machine

And it's hard to dance with a devil on your back
So shake him off

9. This is Why We Fight – The Decembrists

When we die, we will die with our arms unbound
This is why, this is why we fight

10. The Fire – The Roots feat. John Legend

There's something in your heart, and it's in your eyes
It's the fire, inside you
Let it burn
You don't say good luck, you say don't give up
It's the fire, inside you

11. On the Radio – Regina Spektor

No, this is how it works
You peer inside yourself
You take the things you like
And try to love the things you took

12. Soon Love Soon – Vienna Teng

(Soon love soon)
There'll be an evolution of the human soul
(Soon love soon)
We will know that to be a part is to be truly whole

13. Dog Days are Over – Florence + the Machine

Happiness hit her like a train on a track
Coming towards her, stuck still no turning back

14. Have it All – Jeremy Kay

Maybe it's too soon to be sure
But I really do believe
That some day we're gonna have it all

15. Bigger Than my Body – John Mayer

Someday I'll fly
Someday I'll soar
Someday I'll be so damn much more
Cause I'm bigger than my body gives me credit for

16. Think Good Thoughts – Colbie Caillat

I won't let the negativity turn me into my enemy,
Promise to myself that I won't let it get the best of me
